Preventing the Next IT Outage
by Ammar Rayes
Today’s massive IT outages have caused disruptions worldwide, with thousands of flights canceled or delayed and online services down at airports, hospitals, banks, and businesses. Many Microsoft users started their day with a blue screen error. Microsoft has acknowledged an issue affecting Windows programs running technology from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company.
Here are some strategies to prevent future outages:
- Implement a Manager of Managers (MoM): Use a MoM to monitor technologies like CrowdStrike and take action (e.g., disable problematic services) when needed.
- Backup your Systems: Maintain regular backups of critical systems and data to ensure quick recovery in case of an outage.
- Implement a Fast Disaster Recovery Solution: Develop and regularly update a disaster recovery plan for each service provider, enterprise, small business, and end-user. This plan should include steps to take in the event of an outage and must account for non-cloud-based solutions since cloud connectivity may be affected during an outage. Conduct disaster recovery drills to ensure that staff are familiar with their roles and the procedures.
By implementing these strategies, organizations can enhance their resilience against IT outages and minimize disruptions.
