Defining Next Steps: Research, Development, Funding Priorities

Next Steps conversation to define further research needs

The third and final event in ISSIP’s 2024 Series exploring AI Impacts on Global Democracy will provide a summary of themes and findings to date, and turn to defining next steps. Our panel will address questions such as:

  • What do we need to better understand and regulate AI to steer it toward ‘good’ usage and benefit to global democracy?
  • What have been challenges to date and who is responsible for mitigating risks?
  • What research needs should be prioritized and funded? Discuss variations by geography (e.g. Japan, EU, US perspectives … variations in the nature of the fears across geographic region. For example, in Japan people would characterize fears of
  • AI as centered on the opaque ‘black box’ vs. Western fears centering on manipulation and disinformation to manipulate understanding and beliefs of the electorate.
