In 2019, supported by the National Science Foundation Educating the Future of STEM Workforce program, ISSIP (www.issip.org) conducted a workshop on industry’s perspectives on the undergraduate STEM education needed for the future. Now, nearly two years and a pandemic later, we are seeking to deepen as well as broaden the understanding on how best to prepare the future STEM workers to align with industry’s vision of its workforce needs.

In support of the National Science Foundation’s Educating the Future of STEM Workforce (Accelerating Discovery Program), ISSIP is assembling an Industry Panel of Experts on 21st-century Skills in a series of four online workshops in November and Decebmer of 2021 to discuss  STEM education and skills needs in the context of future of work, and to explore how to close the widely perceived gap between current undergraduate degree programs and the entry level job requirements of employers that will contribute to a thriving workforce in our nation.

The results of this project will have the potential for providing a broad and transformative impact on higher education.  By providing industry perspectives on the skills mismatch between employment requirements and the STEM content currently provided by higher education the research intends to inform higher education leaders about industry’s needs in the future and enable our nation’s future workforce to be better prepared for the innovative jobs of the 21st century.
