Utpal Mangla, ISSIP Vice President (2022) General Manager, Industry EDGE Cloud, IBM

Utpal Mangla (MBA, PEng, CMC, ITCP, PMP, ITIL, CSM) is General Manager, Industry EDGE Cloud; IBM Cloud Platform, at IBM where he is responsible for driving EDGE Cloud use case and offerings across all industries. Previously, he was Vice President and Senior Partner in IBM Global Business Services (GBS) and Global Leader of IBM’s Telecommunications, Media and Entertainment (TME) Industry’s Center of Competency. In addition, he leads the ‘Innovation Competency’ focusing on AI, 5G EDGE, Hybrid Cloud and Blockchain Innovations for IBM TME clients worldwide. In his role as senior executive in the business and thought leader in emerging technologies, Utpal’s mission is to fuel growth by building, selling and implementing differentiated competitive market service solution offerings to meet critical business imperatives of IBM customers.

Under Utpal’s leadership, IBM recently achieved the company’s mission of making “Watson AI Impact 1 Billion Consumers” and creation of Industry Blockchain platforms”. Utpal is at the forefront of making Hybrid Cloud and 5G / EDGE technologies real for enterprises across the globe by deploying, scaling and replicating B2B solutions globally.

Utpal has been with IBM (and PwC) since 1998. With 20+ years of consulting, system integration, customer relationships, program delivery and industry experience, Utpal brings depth of expertise and knowledge on building, running and scaling businesses. Utpal has deep experience across all pillars of Services business including complex program management, delivery excellence, sales, account / sector and practice management.

Utpal is a regular speaker at industry forums, university leadership and business conferences globally, including GSMA MWC, THINK, TMForum, Dreamforce, Cannes, Fierce5G, CEM Telecoms, Post Lean Institute & European Commission eSkills2030. With 50+ articles, Utpal contributes to white papers, industry blogs, analyst reports and writes on emerging marketplace trends. He has multiple patents including recent focus on 5G. Utpal is on the board of ATIS, ISSIP Ambassador, current chair of ISSIP Strategy Council and member of CompTIA’s IoT Advisory leadership teamHe is a member of  IBM’s Industry Academy, Industry Services Talent Ecosystem growth & 5G EDGE Acceleration teams.

An active STEM volunteer and P-TECH ‘Pathways in Technology, Early College High School” mentor, Utpal supports education outreach initiatives through University of Toronto and Professional Engineers Ontario. He recently completed Technovate Volunteer Corps study on Digital empowerment of Canadian social sector.  In his role as IBM Academic ambassador, Utpal co-leads annual ‘Workforce of Future’ symposium at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), is a distinguished judge at CSUN’s new venture innovation competition, a Senior Member of IEEE, AI/ML working group member at SCTE (Society of Cable & Telco Engineers), and on TMForum’s ‘AI & Data’ advisory committee.

Utpal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering from Pune University (with highest honours) and MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Mgmt. Utpal has also completed executive studies in the Harvard Business School’s strategic leadership, Wharton School’s financial value creation and Stanford Business School’s entrepreneurial leadership programs. Utpal holds several designations in fields of IT, SAFE Agile, design thinking and is member of PMI, Post Lean Institute, PEO, TAASQ, CIPS and Association of Management Consultants.

I am very passionate about ISSIP and have an ambitious agenda to fuel ISSIP to the next level of eminence.  My mission for ISSIP:

1) Provide ISSIP a broad ecosystem platform for innovation and collaboration with various industry partners and organizations

2) Leadership in helping create jobs of the future and be at the leading edge of imagining ‘future of work’

3) Harness the power of “new technologies” (AI, Blockchain, Cloud, Data, 5G EDGE) to drive new service models

4) Create a knowledge sharing ecosystem between industries, businesses, universities, and education institutions 

5) Sharing industry experiences. Use that as an incubator to further strengthen & drive ISSIP partnerships
