It was our distinct pleasure to have once again sponsored  the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 49, 2016, held Jan 5-8, in Kauai, HI, USA.  Many thanks to Professor Haluk Demirkan (University of Washington), ISSIP Ambassador to HICSS, and other ISSIPers for yet another successful collaboration with HICSS!

HICSS-49 brought together over a thousand researchers and practitioners to exchange perspectives and ideas in various areas of service, information, computer, and system sciences.  System sciences are fundamental to the study of service systems, and therefore ISSIP aligning conference efforts with HICSS is a natural fit.   This year, ISSIP and ISSP members led various tutorials, workshops and mini-tracks…

On day 1, ISSIP Service Innovation Framework SIG, led by Heather Yurko (Cisco),  ran a 1/2 day workshop  – Theory to Application: Comprehensive Tools for Service Innovation from ISSIP.  The session included 2 presenations and 1 panel.  First, Paul Mugge, Director NC State,  Center for Innovation Studies (CIMS), spoke about the CISM Innovation Maturity Model that has been used by many companies over the years, then lead participants through a trial version of the tool. Next, Gerhard Gudergan, Chair, Business Transformation, RWTH Aachen University, and a leading member of the ISSIP Service Innovation Framework SIG walked the participant through the ISSIP Service Innovation Framework (a framework developed by Andres and Hans and several other SIF SIG members and Gerhard’s and Heather’s leadership).   At the latter part of the workshop, Heather moderated a panel with Gerhad, Paul, Alexandra Medina-Borja (National Science Foundation, NSF), and I, where Alexandra spoke about the NSF programs supporting  smart service systems research and described how by encouraging public-private partnership they bring futuristic ideas to life and into commercialization.   I then spoke about how service innovation and T-shaped-ness help close the skills gap for the 21st century, and  the critical role professional associations, in particular ISSIP, play to promote service innovation and service innovators across the globe.

Also on day 1, Dianne Fodell of IBM, led a 1/2 day workshop on Cognitive Computing: Cognitive Assistants and Deep Analytics for Research & Teaching where Grady Booche (Chief Scientist, IBM Research), Dan Russel (Tech Lead for Search Quality and User Happiness, Google), and Jim Spohrer (IBM Global University Program & Cognitive Institute) spoke on how cognitive computing is augmenting human capabilities and discussed some of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in developing cognitive assistants.   Professor K. Hidaka (Tokyo Tech) also spoke about “Wisdom Computing”, and  Professor Haluk Demirkan shared his experience from the viewpoint of a faculty teaching and researching cognitive computing.

On the 2nd day ISSIP Education and Research SIG, chaired by Ralph Badinelli (Virginia Tech), Haluk Demirkan, Jim Spohrer, ran a 1/2 day mini-track on Smart Service Systems: Analytics, Cognition and Innovation .  On the 3rd day, IBM led a hands-on 2-hour workshop tutorial on Bluemix and Watson Analytics (not to be confused with Watson Cognitive Cloud), and shared many resources available to academia for research and for building these platforms into their curriculum.

A link to the Conference Proceedings are currently posted on the HICSS website, and they will be published through the IEEE Computer Society soon.  Also, check out these keynotes:
